Who’d a thunk it? – 17 entries in week # 3 of the College Football “High- 5” Contest tied for first place with 4 – 1 records, while not one person ran the table at 5 – 0 ? Who’d a thunk yours truly would be beaten again? Everybody. At least I managed to go 3-2, upping my season tally to a very bourgeois 8-7.
Back to those 17 folks who all went 4 -1. Most lost on Baylor not taking care of business with a very tough K-State team in a very tight contest, but many also bet against Wisconsin hosting Nebraska, who were manhandled and pushed up and down the field all day by the “Big Uglies” (that being the nickname for the behemoth Badgers offensive linemen). Regardless of how everybody ended up at 4-1, we can only have one winner of the FREE Original Retro Brand t-shirt, and the person to win the tie-breaking drawing is Rebecca Joy. In honor of the Crimson Tide routing the Gators, Rebecca chose this Alabama shirt as her prize. CONGRATS REBECCA!
For those of you just joining us for the first time and want to kick my arse and win a FREE ORB shirt, then peep the rules below real quick. The rest of ya’ll know what to do…
1) Every week I will preview 5 of the most compelling College Football Match-ups for the upcoming weekend and offer my expertise, or more commonly lack thereof, as to who will win & why, along with a predicted final score.
2) Contestants will e-mail in their picks for the same 5 games to me, and the person that beats me and/or the person who picks the most games correctly (no point spreads, straight up wins and losses) will win a FREE Original Retro Brand t-shirt of their choice. In the event of a tie, we will have a drawing to determine the final winner. Send your picks to me at email@example.com no later than kickoff of the first scheduled game to be counted! ***ONLY ONE ENTRY PER CUSTOMER***
3) I will announce the winner on this blog and our Facebook page the following week – Usually Tuesday or Wednesday – Then we’ll do it again. NOW TO THE GAMES!
GAME 1: CAL (3-1) @ # 9 Oregon (3-1): Is this your gimmie for this week? Since dropping their first game to LSU, the Ducks have won 3 straight averaging 60 – that’s SIXTY – points a game (# 1 in nation for points scored)! Heisman candidate LaMichael James is averaging 9.4 – that’s NINE POINT FOUR – yards per carry! Despite CAL being 3-1, I believe Oregon puts up another 60, and James’ yds. per carry average goes over 10 – THAT’S TEN!! DUCKS – 64, BEARS – 24.
GAME 2: # 22 Arizona State (4-1) @ Utah (2-2): The Utes have been a Jekyll and Hyde team so far, playing tough against USC and rolling BYU, but being steamrolled by the Huskies. The Sun Devils are suffering no similar identity crisis on their way to upending two ranked teams en route to their current first place spot in the Pac-12 South. Who’ll show up for Utah this time? Makes no difference. SUN DEVILS – 38, UTES – 17.
GAME 3: # 15 Auburn (4-1) @ # 10 Arkansas (4-1): The Newtonless defending National Champs have been extremely resilient, and doing much better than most expected, thank you very much. After snatching yet another huge victory from defeat in the final minutes versus South Carolina in Columbia, the Tigers are still proving a formidable foe. Formidable enough to halt the Hogs? Arkansas stormed back to hand Texas A&M their second straight collapse, and are ranked 4th in the nation in total passing yards (Auburn churns out roughly 300 yards on the ground per game – 5th in the nation). Boy, this is a tough one…. Auburn finally loses a close one as the mojo stays with Arky. RAZORBACKS – 24, TIGERS – 21.
GAME 4: # 12 Michigan (5-0) @ Northwestern (2-2): Ok, Ok, it looks like another gimme game, right? Maybe, but I have a hunch the Wildcats will rebound from their devastating loss to Illinois (they were up 28 – 10, and lost on a last second field goal – ouch!), and knock the Wolverines down just a notch. Outside of their miracle comeback against a so-so Notre Dame team, Michigan hasn’t had to face anybody as down and dirty as Northwestern to date. I like the Cats with home-field advantage as my upset special – yeah, I said it… WILDCATS – 24, WOLVERINES – 23.
GAME 5: # 3 Oklahoma (4-0) @ # 11 Texas (4-0): You know every week we must have our “biggie” game, and what better game than the “Red River Rivalry” to feature this time around. This year the Longhorns are the “home team” (they alternate each year) as they play the Sooners for the 106th time in the Cotton Bowl. Texas still might have a real McCoy on their side (yeah, I wrote that – sorry..), but the Sooners are too consistent on both sides of the ball, and will make it back-to-back RRR victories. SOONERS – 42, LONGHORNS – 34.
