Before I gloat about Georgia's downright-ugly-beautiful victory over the Gators, Arizona's shocking victory over USC which brought me my first "Upset Special" win of the year, and winning week # 9 of High-5 picks outright with a 4-1 record, I must apologize for all of the glitches we've had with the contest comments the past few weeks. Apparently our computer guys did an 'upgrade' throughout the system which caused the inevitable havoc one gets when said 'upgrade' occurs. What do I know about such things? I just watch football and pretend to know what I'm talking about. For this past week at least, I didn't have to pretend! Ok, gloating and glitches in the books.
If this is your first time checking out the Retro brand "High-5" College football contest, welcome aboard and here are the easy as 1-2-3 rules.....
1) Every week I will preview 5 College Football Match-ups for the upcoming weekend and offer my expertise, or more commonly lack thereof, as to who will win & why, along with a predicted final score.
2) Contestants will enter their picks for the same 5 games by clicking into the comment section of this post and the person that beats me and/or the person who picks the most games correctly (no point spreads, straight up wins and losses) will win a FREE Original Retro Brand Vintage t-shirt of their choice from originalretrobrand.com In the event of a tie, we will have a drawing to determine the final winner (this happens quite a bit). In the rare event that I win like this past week, nobody gets nuthin’! Comments must be posted no later than kickoff of the first scheduled game which is 11/3/12 @NOON EST to be counted! ***ONLY ONE ENTRY PER CUSTOMER***
3) I will announce the winner on this blog and our Facebook page the following week – Usually Wednesday or Thursday – Then we’ll do it again.
Enough of my yackin', to the games!
GAME 1: #16 Texas A&M (6-2) @ #15 Mississippi State (7-1): Hard to not be impressed with both of these teams this year. SEC newcomer A&M gave Florida and LSU all they could handle in close losses, and they've routed everybody else. State were brought back to reality by Bama last weekend, but nonetheless they're still a team on the rise. Gonna give the nod to the home team in the burgundy bowl. Bulldogs - 35, Aggies - 33.
GAME 2: #23 Texas (6-2) @ #18 Texas Tech (6-2): Horns are lucky to have left Manhattan with a W last week with 12 ticks on the clock (Texas hasn't lost to Kansas since 1938?!), and got a-kicked by the Sooners the week before. Tech got smacked by the Sooners too, but they also put the first kabosh on Geno Smith a few weeks ago, and David Ash ain't no Geno Smith. Red Raiders rock at home. Red Raiders - 38, Longhorns - 28.
GAME 3: #4 Oregon (8-0) @ #17 USC (6-2): It's Thursday and I think Kenjon Barner just ran for another Oregon touchdown. The Ducks keep on rolling. The Trojans BCS title hopes are all but gone and another loss here would end it for real. A win here would sure do wonders for their heads as they eye the Irish down the road for the classic regular season finale. Ducks are thinking revenge from 38-35 loss last year and trip to the Rose Bowl. Consider both done. Ducks - 52, Trojans - 38.
GAME 4: #1 Alabama (8-0) @ #5 LSU (7-1): I almost had this as my upset special but then got real. Bama has no weaknesses, period. They simply wear teams down and are so well disciplined and conditioned that only a flukey special teams play could make a difference to beat them. Won't happen in Death Valley. Crimson Tide - 24, Tigers - 13.
UPSET SPECIAL: #24 Oklahoma State (5-2) @ #2 Kansas State (8-0): You'd think my bromance with Collin Klein and home field advantage at Bill Snyder Family Stadium would make #2 K-State a lock, right? It's a family stadium for God's sake! Sorry fam, but them Pokes are a ridin' into town after back-to-back whoopin's of # 13 West Virginia and # 14 Texas Tech respectively (dropped 55 on both), and they're a gonna hand Willie and his Wildcats loss umero uno. Cowboys - 38, Widcats - 28.
That's it for the games folks. Anybody keeping track of their season long records? Let me know how you're doing (I'm 25-21 through 9 weeks; 1/9 on upset specials). I'm also looking for game suggestions for next week along with your best 2-3 sentence predictions for each. I'm sure you can do better than yours truly, so send me what you got so I can take it easy next week. Now lets see those picks and GOOD LUCK!
