The AAA affiliate of the New York Yankees were home to current Yankee stars Melky Cabrera, Phil Hughes, and Joba Chamberlain at one time.   Even Roger Clemens had a stint with the team.   The Scranton/Wilkes Barre Yanks were known as the Scranton/Wilkes Barre Red Barons from 1987-2006 when they were the AAA affiliate of the Phillies.   So if  the Yankees end up facing the defending World Champion Phillies in the World Series this year, it will be a proverbial who’s who of former Minor leaguer’s who have made it to the pinnacle of the sport.  Former Red Baron players for the Phillies include Ryan Howard,  Jimmy Rollins, Cole Hamels, Chase Utley, Shane Victorino, and Brett Myers to name a few.

The current team has won the Northern Division of the International League 4 straight years since becoming the Yankees affiliate in 2006, capturing the title in 2008.

WHAT AM I?

The team mascot for the Scranton Yankees is named “Champ,” and he wears the # 26 in honor of the parent clubs’ 26 World Series championship victories.   He may be named Champ, and he may aspire to be a Champ, but WHAT is he?   WILL SOME ONE OUT THERE PLEASE COMMENT ON WHAT KIND OF ANIMAL THIS FURRY FELLOW IS, BECAUSE I HAVE NO IDEA!!!
