Today Retro Brand has the honor of speaking with Dana Pump. To date, Dana and his identical twin brother David , have raised over 7 Million dollars through the Harold & Carole Pump Foundation which they founded with their Mom Carole back in 2000 to honor their late father who had lost his fight with cancer in the same year. Dana and David would lose their beloved Mother in 2012. The foundation seeks to raise funds to combat cancer by creating awareness, establishing treatment programs, and helping to find a cure for this terrible disease. I had the chance to ask Dana a few questions while working for Retro Brand at their 2015 Celebrity Golf Tournament followed by the star studded fundraising dinner a few weeks ago and here’s what we discussed…
Andy: Before we take on the serious stuff, let’s talk about your talent on the Golf Course. Actually it wasn’t golf, but specifically your attempting to score at the Retro Brand Corn Hole game at the first hole and coming up a little short… What’s your take on that Dana? On a positive note, Rick Barry, Aaron Boone, Donovan McNabb, Norm Nixon, Jim Plunkett, and Ozzie Smith all made their shots which scored as automatic donations from Retro Brand to your foundation.
Dana: My take is that those guys all cheated (laughs), but I’m happy they scored for the foundation. I’m glad the guys had fun with it.. McNabb took the corn hole game more serious than the golf. It was great.
Andy: I did see some of them step over the throwing line but we let it slide.. Throughout the course of the most unforgettable evening dinner ceremony, it seems as if every celebrity speaker spoke to your insurmountable tenacity and refusal to take “no” for an answer when it came to bringing the very biggest names in the sports and entertainment industry under one roof where others surely would have failed. How do you do it?
Dana: My Mom. It’s that simple. My love for my Mom & Dad and my passion for this cause is what drives me.
Andy: Can you share a few details on some of the success stories that have become reality due to the funds raised through the foundation?
Dana: Having the overwhelming support of Denzel & Pauletta Washington over the years has helped fuel the success of the foundation, and my brother and I are so grateful.
Andy: In addition to your foundation, You oversee a successful Collegiate Athletic service, and a series of successful basketball camps. On your company website, you rightfully promote your “…extensive rolodex of sports-industry contacts” as the backbone behind your success. I witnessed first hand the depth of that rolodex at the dinner with many of the world’s top athletes past & present in attendance; Bo Jackson, Oscar Robertson, Steve Nash, Derek Jeter, Artis Gilmore & Oscar DeLa Hoya, to name a very few. I’m not one to get star-struck, but this event left me dumbfounded. Obviously you’re not one to be easily frazzled, but has there ever been a celebrity who simply made you lose your cool in his or her presence, and could you tell us who?
Dana: The most interesting man in the world (that would be actor Jonathan Goldsmith, the Dos Equis beer guy). Him and Gabby Douglas. She just blew me away with what she did in the Olympics and is just a super sweet girl.
Andy: An unlikely duo but a great one for sure! The Double Pump Day Camp, and High School Boy’s West Coast All-Star Camps, have the reputation for being some of the premier instructional and recruiting camps in the country. Guys like Baron Davis, Luke Walton, & Chauncey Billups are just a few who became NBA stars that have laced em’ up for you. Can you describe how it feels to know you had a hand in mentoring many of the NBA’s best?
Dana: Being able to see them come up from when they were just kids has been fantastic.. All great guys, and all gentlemen.
Andy: Speaking of gentlemen, Retro Brand CEO Marc Herman is a member on the Harold & Carole Pump Foundation Board of Directors. I know you and David are big fans of Marc and his gear. What is it you love so much about the brand?
Dana: The shirts are the top of the line. Not like the other stuff out there. You know, they’re really soft and have those cool retro logo’s. As for Marc, he gives from his heart. Year in, year out, he has always been there for us giving generously – a stand up guy and true friend.
I’d like to thank Dana as well as David for their time and hosting such an outstanding event for a great cause. Please give what you can by visiting the Harold & Carole Pump Foundation.
