Brandi, you're a fine girl...

With this post, you can now add the Original Retro Brand to one of the many places you can find a "this day in sports history" type scenario.  Does that mean we're not "Original" after all?  Heck No! -  it just means we think we know a thing or two when it comes to all things retro, and we're simply going to give you our vintage from a different vantage, if you will.  We're also not going to serve it up every single day, just when we feel like it.  Lastly, it's also a cool way to show our awesome vintage gear!

Let's celebrate a few birthdays in sports for starters....Women's Soccer is a hot topic right now (with good reason), and former CAL & Santa Clara star Brandi Chastain is STILL HOT today at 43 years old....The mid-summer classic is in the books, and so is the 31st birthday for  5X Yankees All-Star pitcher CC Sabathia....Not surprised that CC was a High School all-conference Tight End who received scholarship offers from UCLA & Hawaii.

DANG, I love our graphics!!  Vintage doesn’t always mean sports around here, so…..

On this day in 1967 (I was 7 years old), The Jimi Hendrix Experience started a 3-night gig at the infamous "Cafe-a-Go-Go" in New York City, and I can remember fighting with my friend over who was the better guitarist - Hendrix or George Harrison (Rob Keller if you're out there, you were right, it was Hendrix).....On this day in 1990, over 350,000 people attended Roger Waters ( Pink Floyd) performance of 'The Wall' at the Berlin Wall.  I totally remember seeing that on TV, and thinking Reagan and Waters definitely tore that baby down!

The last photo in the Original Retro Brand's "Kickin' Captions Contest", gave our judges as much of a hard time picking the winner, as the refs gave yellow cards to the Dutch in Spain's intense 1-0 World Cup Finals victory over the Netherlands.  Congratulations to Spain on their first World Cup title, and congratulations to Kristina Miller of Simi Valley, Ca.,  for picking the winning caption - check it out below:

As is our custom (well, most of the time anyway!), when we finish up one contest, we like to start another, and with College Football just a measly 7 1/2 weeks away we cannot resist. This Thursday 7/15/10, we'll be kicking off "MASCOT WARS", in which we'll pit the Original Retro Brand's TOP 32 College Mascot T-shirts in a bracket tournament to determine who is # 1.  The contest will run those 7 1/2 weeks leading up to the finals on College Colors Day, September 3rd.  Prizes will include $250 worth of  Original Retro Brand merchandise for 1st prize, $150 for 2nd, and $75 for 3rd.  THIS IS GOING TO BE OUR BEST CONTEST YET!  Be sure and check back Thursday for all the details!

"They" say all good things must come to an end.  I'm not talking about Lebron's career in Cleveland (thank God that ridiculous horse & pony show is over!!!), or the McRib leaving McDonald's (saddest day of my life). I am referring to the 8th and final installment of the Original Retro Brand's "Kickin' Captions Contest."

We've really enjoyed all of the creative responses that have come in over the past 4 weeks leading up to the 2010 World Cup Finals this Sunday, and hope you've all had fun participating. I'm pretty sure all the winners who received FREE Original Retro Brand t's had a good time!  Our latest winner is Vahe Mankerian from Pasadena, California, and you can see his winning caption from Tuesday's photo below...

"SPAIN KO'S GERMANY IN THE 90TH MINUTE!"

Vahe gets the win because he made his caption entry before the outcome of the game, and thus gets major props for making this prediction.  He was only off 16 minutes as Spain scored their knockout goal at the 74 minute mark.  His response to winning was (and I quote) " Woohooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!  I would like to say I love the quality and feel of your shirts, I own about 5 of them." It seemed a little strange to see MLS star Landon Donovan wearing an L.A. Galaxy jersey, launching a perfectly delivered corner kick to U.S.A. World Cup teammate Edson Buddle, for the first goal in a victory for his team over the Seattle Sounders on the 4th of July.  Not strange to see the skill of the combo scoring, but strange not to see them doing so suited up for the U.S.A. in the semi-finals of the World Cup in South Africa.  Perhaps after the World Cup final this Sunday, I'll be able to move on once and for all.  Now it's time to move on to the winner of  Friday's Original Retro Brand "Kickin' Captions Contest." Chris Glavine of Kingston, NS Canada, nailed it perfectly as you can see in the photo below:

So we're down to 7 teams from 32 in the World Cup.  Landon's goal seems like eons ago.  It would have been a great 4th of July birthday present for the U.S.A. to still be in it, but it's time to stick a cherry bomb in that thought.  After what seemed like thousands of 1-0 games, there are signs of some real fireworks coming through however, with Germany, Brazil, Argentina, & Uruguay finding net 2 or more times in their respective knockout round games.  As of this post, the fireworks have gone off for the Netherlands in their 2-1 stunner over Brazil.  Uruguay and Ghana just underway...

After the quarter & semi finals this weekend/next week, all will be decided in the title game on July 11th, which leaves us with just 3 (today, Tuesday 7/6, & Friday, 7/9) more photos in the Original Retro Brand "Kickin' Captions Contest."
